The Medical Faculty and its University Hospital are located in Halle (Saale), in the centre of Germany, close to Berlin. With a history spanning over 300 years, it is one of the oldest medical schools in Europe. Germany's first University Hospital was founded here. It offers its patients the highest degree of medical care thanks to its wide range of specialised clinics and institutes. Each year, around 38,000 patients are treated on an inpatient basis in the hospital’s 1,100 beds, and 400,000 patients are treated on an outpatient basis. The University Hospital offers an array of comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutics. Dan Rujescu is head of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Halle. It has been opened in 1891 and housed famous former scientists like e.g. Carl Wernicke. Nowadays, the in-patient department consists of 6 wards for over 100 in-patients. The Department currently treats approximately 800 in-patients each year, whereby the largest group of patients suffers from schizophrenia, affective disorders and substance dependence. It offers a broad spectrum of state of the art research in clinical and basic research. The Department has successfully carried out large multicenter projects in national and international cooperations. Beside others the Department is involved in high level national (e.g. German Network on Depression or German Network on Schizophrenia); and several international high level projects (e.g. EU projects).
